Ground Source Heat Pump Feasibility study

ADAS Energy consultants recently conducted a feasibility study on installing a GSHP at a greenhouse nursery based in Evesham. The recommendations were that a GSHP would reduce the nursery's energy costs and would work with the environment to provide clean, efficient heating and cooling all year round.

More and more businesses within the agriculture and farming sectors have realised the importance of improving efficiency within their processes and at the same time making important savings both in financial terms and in carbon emissions. One such business is a greenhouse nursery based in Evesham, Worcestershire.

The business, as a part of its improvement, plans to provide thermabed under-floor heating for the plants and maintain a temperature of 20ºC. Currently, two air heaters of 176kW supplied by 35 sec gas oil support the total site area of approximately 2000 Sq. m. Last year the overall cost of oil usage to support these air heaters was £55,000. The organisation employed ADAS to support their improvement plans and to assist them in identifying more efficient methods to generate and deliver heat onsite.

ADAS conducted an investigation and determined that the installation of an environmentally friendly technology such as a Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) would effectively reduce the cost by displacing oil as fuel and at the same time reduce carbon emissions. ADAS took a step further to assist the nursery by conducting a feasibility study to consider the ways by which GSHP’s could effectively bring down costs and carbon emissions.

The feasibility study concluded that a GSHP would effec...
