Championing ‘green infrastructure’

ADAS Environmental Consultants developed a green infrastructure strategy for the Norwich and South Norfolk area, which was facing the prospect of large scale housing developments.

The concept of ‘green infrastructure’ is now relatively high on the regional planning agenda. It refers to the need for local authorities to recognise the importance of green spaces as part of the overall planning process.

Having obtained funding from Natural England, Norfolk County Council embarked on an initiative to draw up a green infrastructure strategy .

The task involved working with another consultancy to create a detailed understanding of current green spaces in order to identify sustainable transport corridors and sustainable wildlife corridors.

The early stages of the work were devoted to mapping the green spaces, identifying existing corridors and talking to local groups about creating new corridors by building cycle ways, paths and bridges.

These ideas were incorporated into the strategy and presented back to the council’s steering group, with a list of projects that could be entered into the funding and planning process.

ADAS' broad portfolio of land-related skills makes us the ideal partner for local authorities who are looking for reliable professional assistance in the development of a green infrastructure strategy to aid present or future planning challenges.
