The Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 gave the general public the ‘right to roam’. But it also gave local authorities greater responsibility for managing access to land and improving the rights of way network. ADAS has been actively supporting councils in their efforts to implement the Act.
On behalf of Bedfordshire Coiunty Council, ADAS Consultants designed and carried out a large-scale market research project to provide a clear understanding of local needs and perceptions of the footpath provision. We interviewed a broad range of stakeholder groups (eg. farmers, ramblers, landowners etc) to identify key issues associated with local Rights of Way (RoW) usage. We also prepared a quantitative study to assess the views of local residents. The results of this exercise played an important role in driving the development of the county council’s RoW Improvement Plan.
