Why food businesses should be looking at wind power as a renewable energy source?

Corporate food businesses - retailers, manufacturers or suppliers - all need to demonstrate improved environmental performance to the increasing expectations of their consumers, customers and investors.

These food companies also need to differentiate themselves as responsible businesses both environmentally and socially, so as to improve their competitive positioning and brand loyalty.

Using wind power as a renewable energy source is both an opportunity to build asset value and secure long term green energy at lower cost, and to demonstrate a commitment to improved environment performance and reducing carbon footprint.

Average electricity costs for food businesses are typically between 6 and 8 pence per kilo watt hour, combining both day and night tariffs.

Typically a 2 mega watt single wind turbine in a geographic area that provides wind speed at about 6.5 metres per second will generate electricity that can be used on site, at a cost of about 4.94 pence per kilo watt hour and have an investment payback of about 5 years. If wind speed is above 7 metres per second, the payback period is likely to be less than 5 years.
