With both Government policy and public opinion increasingly focused on waste management issues, ADAS is constantly drawing upon its long history of scientific and technical expertise in areas such as that of anaerobic digestion, in order to develop and deploy new waste disposal systems with multiple benefits for both industry and the public sector.
The natural process of anaerobic digestion has been used for centuries by the sewage and farming industries as a means of treating waste. More recently, the process has been actively developed to treat biodegradable municipal waste (BMW) including food waste. Seen by many as attractive means of providing safe recycling via agricultural land, the economics are becoming more attractive through improved mechanisms for the capture and utilisation of the by-products.
ADAS expertise covers not only scientific research into the process itself, but also into associated areas including digester technology, the suitability of waste materials to the process, and of by-products and their usage. Of increasing relevance is the use of biogas, which has the potential for electricity generation, either on site or for sale back into the National Grid. Also bio liquid for use as a soil conditioner or fertiliser and fibre from the digestate which is potentially useful as a compost medium.
