ADAS is currently leading a project for Visit Wales to investigate the impact of weather and climate change on the visitor economy. The ultimate goal of the study, supported by climate change and tourism experts from the universities of Aberystwyth, East Anglia and Manchester, is to understand and report on how the Welsh visitor economy can adapt its offering considering the levels of climate change expected in the future.
The first stage of the project, now completed, was to establish the importance of tourism to the country’s economy by examining data such as tourist numbers, reasons for visits and numbers of international visitors. The next phase comprises investigating how weather affects visitor demand and the impact of climate change in Wales using the latest information from UK Climate Projections (UKCP09).
By focusing on three key study areas and different leisure activities in each, ADAS is able to establish the patterns of visitor activity and map information around the effects of climate change on visitor behaviour.
