Improving Waterways for All

ADAS provide a range of services to support British Waterways and their contractors under British Waterways’ National Dredging Contract, maintaining the inland waterway network. The outcome of this work is an enhanced environment for fish and wildlife, a more navigable waterway for boaters and the provision of a wonderful environment for all to enjoy.

ADAS Environmental Consultants provide a range of services to support British Waterways and their contractors in maintaining the inland waterway network. For many years ADAS has been privileged to work with British Waterways who care for 2,200 miles of the country’s 200 year old canals and rivers and Land and Water Services, an innovative and environmentally aware specialist contractor who undertake much of the essential dredging work to maintain navigability.

Land and Water Services, working on behalf of British Waterways, request a range of ADAS services to assist with various projects under British Waterways’ National Dredging Contract. ADAS arrange for the provision of essential information to enable these important dredging projects to be carried out in a timely and cost effective manner.

To ensure that dredging can be undertaken safely, ADAS arrange plant enquiries prior to commencement of each dredging project to determine the location of any existing underground and overhead services. ADAS co-ordinates the collection of utilities’ data and supplies the complete information package to the contractor.

Prior to dredging, ADAS collect sediment samples and arrange analysis to determine the most environmentally suitable recycling route for the material. Dredging sediments contain plant nutrients in organic matter and where it is found that the sediment could be beneficially applied to agricultural land, ADAS carries out detailed assessments of potential receptor sites to demonstrate that the material can be recycled. ADAS then produces an agricultural benefit statement and assists with the preparation of the documentation that is required by the Environment Agency.

Other services can be provided on request e.g. photographic recording (before, during and after work on site), ecology surveys, field area/dredgings measurement and contract completion documentation can be included as part of the package.

The successful completion of waterway dredging projects is achieved through reliable expert advice, an excellent contractor with a sensitive approach to all projects and the good working relationship between British Waterways’ National Dredging Team, Land and Water Services and ADAS. The outcome is an enhanced environment for fish and other important wildlife/habitats along the waterway, a more navigable waterway for boaters and the provision of a wonderful environment for all to enjoy.
