ADAS has been shortlisted for two Edie Environmental Excellence awards. The nominations are in the Sustainable Transport and Low Carbon categories. The winners will be announced at a ceremony at the prestigious Hurlingham Club in London on November 4th, 2010.
ADAS caught the attention of judges for its comprehensive business travel emissions reduction programme and for work with the Peak District National Park Authority to develop a low carbon footprinting tool for farms in the park area.
Richard Laverick, ADAS’ corporate responsibility director, said the nominations demonstrated ADAS’ internal commitment to improving its environmental track record and its ability to develop robust solutions for clients.
He said: “Working on projects both internally and with clients to improve our environment is reward enough, but to grab the initial attention of Edie’s judging panel is a real bonus".
“As a company offering services right across the environmental sector, it’s important we strive to improve our own performance. In terms of business travel – all consultants’ journeys are logged online and we’ve reduced emissions associated with car use by six per cent and air travel emissions by more than half between 2008 and 2009. These are excellent initial results and we’re refining the programme further,” added Richard.
The carbon footprinting tool ADAS helped the Peak District National Park Authority develop is based on a pilot with ten farms, said Martin Buckland, ADAS’ environment director. This will help other landowners not only in the region but potentially around the country to benchmark their future carbon emissions reduction programmes.
Martin added: “Agriculture, like other sectors we work with, has tough carbon emissions targets to meet and this tool could become integral to helping farmers reduce their impact.”
The Awards for Environmental Excellence are now in their fourth year and recognised as one of the top awards in Europe after being awarded RSA (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce) accreditation in 2009.
