Screening tool central to flood risk assessment


The increasing frequency of potentially catastrophic flooding events has focused the attention of utility companies on flood risk assessment for those installations vital in maintaining customer supplies. ADAS has developed a screening tool which allows for early assessment of flood risk on a utility company's infrastructure.

Following the introduction of risk based monitoring programmes and the availability of new analytical methods, metaldehyde (one of the active substances use to control slugs) has been detected by water companies in water supplies across the country.

Catchment management plans are vital for tackling diffuse pollution


Diffuse pollution costs the water industry an estimated £250m a year. Traditionally companies have relied upon end-of-pipe technologies to remove the pollutants from the water, but as these technologies are capital-intensive and unsustainable in the long term, many companies are now looking at alternative solutions to the problem.

Catchment management plans will be vital if the UK is to improve water quality and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, according to scientists from ADAS speaking at the consultancy's Water Concerns conference.
